Kilby Woodland Trust

In October 2009 Kilby Woodland Trust was formed and registered as a charity to acquire 6.12 hectares of land on a long lease from Leicestershire County Council for a community woodland. The Trust subsequently engaged a tree specialist to prepare a tree planting scheme for the land. Funds for the woodland were obtained from English Woodland Grant Scheme, Stepping Stones, Kilby W.I., Kilby Parish Council, local sponsorships and covenants and from the yearly Lumberjacks' Supper held at the Dog and Gun in Kilby.

8000 trees were initially planted and are now well established. Further trees continue to be planted. Fruit trees, edible hedge, paddock, wildflower meadow and vegetable gardens have also been provided. The woodland is enjoyed by many, including those who cultivate the flower and vegetable gardens, residents of Kilby, dog walkers and visitors to the adjoining Dog and Gun public house.

Now the site is getting established and becoming well known, there is a noticeable increase in the volume of people enjoying the woodland's walks.

The Trust has provided picnic tables and seats and a purpose made hand gate for the Fleckney Road entrance. Pedestrian bridges have been installed and it is intended to provide a further stream crossing at the southern end of the site. There is a pedestrian access from the Dog and Gun car park and two pedestrian accesses from the Fleckney Road.

Because of the regular dog walkers, dog waste bins have been installed. The Trust has also installed bird boxes and hide for the use of owls and other birds.

The Trust continues to have support from Trust members for the ongoing maintenance and improvement of the woodland.
